Saigon Opera House & Caravelle Hotel (5FH)-s

Saigon Opera House & Caravelle Hotel (5FH)-s
Saigon Opera House
is a smaller counterpart of the Hanoi Opera House (built from 1901 to 1911, and shaped like the Opéra Garnier in Paris). The Saigon Opera House owes its specific characteristics to the work of architect Félix Olivier, while construction was under supervision of architects Ernest Guichard and Eugène Ferret in 1900.
Caravelle Hotel
Considered one of the top 100 luxury hotels in the world, the Caravelle Hotel, set opposite the Saigon Opera House on Lam Son Square, is one of the leading luxury properties in Ho Chi Minh City. It draws a decidedly business-heavy clientele with its excellent facilities, comfortable, well-decorated rooms and spectacular views.

Façade of the Petit Palais in Paris
The Municipal Theatre in 1915
Its architectural style is influenced by the flamboyant style of the French Third Republic with the façade shaped like the Petit Palais which was built in the same year in France. The house had a main seating floor plus two levels of seating above, and was capable of accommodating 1,800 people. The design of all the inscriptions, décor, and furnishings were drawn by a French artist and sent from France.

However, the décor of the façade faced some criticisms. In accordance with Gothic style, the house facade was decorated with inscription and reliefs (like City Hall), but it was criticized as being too complicated. In 1943, some of the complicated decoration was removed. On the occasion of 300th anniversary of Saigon in 1998, the city government had some façade decor restored.

1934 Greifswald Gothic House Marketplace Germany Ryck - Original Photogravure
This is an original 1934 photogravure of the Gothic house in the marketplace of Greifswald, Germany (Deutschland). The town is on the border of the Baltic Sea. The photographer of this image is from the Staatliche Bildstelle of Berlin, Germany.
Period Paper is pleased to offer an exceptional collection of historic original photogravures of the landscape, architecture, and people of pre-war Germany. The actual border around the photogravure is larger than what is shown in the digital image, and each image usually has a caption in German, English, French, and Italian which will be included with the item when shipped. However, we wanted to show you the actual image up close and the dimensions provided next to the “Size” indicate the size of the actual photogravure only. The total size is approximately two inches larger in width and height. These original photogravures are not to be confused with the more common halftone prints. Each of these photogravures was created from an engraved plate and provides exceptional detail, contrast, warmth, and depth, making them excellent original images for framing.
The Photogravure Process. A photogravure is a photographic image produced from an engraving plate–an expensive and rarely used process today. Through the transfer of etching ink from an etched copperplate to special dampened paper run through an etching press, this process creates an image that registers an extraordinary variety of tones. This unique tonal range comes from photogravure’s variable depth of etch–the shadows are etched many times deeper than the highlights unlike the halftone processes that merely vary dot size. The prints produced via this process have the subtle tones of a photograph and the art quality of a lithograph, making them extraordinarily collectible items.
Please note that there is printing on the reverse.
